  • dry heat
  • humid heat
  • harsh sun rays
  • exposure to poisonous plants
  • exposure to mosquitoes

If your baby has a skin irritation on their body, the first thing to remember is to not panic. A baby has incredibly sensitive skin as it is and no matter in rain, snow, sleet, or shine, anything can irritate a baby’s skin at any time - please know that this is normal.

After understanding that whatever is going on with your baby’s skin is normal, you can self-assuredly, proceed to whip out your magnifying glass and start the detective work! It is time to identify the problem.

Identifying the Problem

What is happening on your baby’s skin? You have to label the problem in order to find a solution. Here are some skin irritations to keep an eye out for this summer:

Chafing - Chafing happens from repetitive friction and usually appears on baby’s thighs, glutes, and armpit areas. As parents know, this issue is not unique to summer but the summer months can produce more damaging effects from chafing due to the combination of a humid climate and prolonged sweating.

Diaper rash - Diaper rash often occurs when diapers are too tight or wet for a long period of time. It can also occur if your baby is allergic to specific brands of detergent, wipes, or the diaper itself. This kind of rash is not unique to summer but the hot months add a layer of complexity to diaper rash because of the elements of sweat and heat.

Mosquito bites - Mosquito bites appear after being your baby has been exposed outside for long periods of time in the outdoor areas where mosquitoes are prevalent. These bites can appear anywhere on baby depending on what parts of the skin were exposed.

Poison ivy - This skin irritation happens when you rub against or touch this plant. It can cause itching, swelling, and at times, a painful rash. Poison ivy can appear on any places on the skin exposed to the plant.

Sunburn - Caused by prolonged sun exposure, this summer skin irritation is arguably the most dangerous of the bunch due to the sensitivity of the baby’s skin in-comparison to the harshness of the sun. Sunburn can appear on any part of the body that has been exposed to the sun without sunscreen.

Remedy and Soothe

Now, it’s time to remedy. Prepare the skin for the summer months and soothe the skin as irritations begin to occur. Here are some tips to keep you informed and aware for your baby’s safety and comfort this summer.

  • Chafing - To prevent chafing, apply nosebalm to areas on the skin that frequently rub together. This precaution will allow the skin to glide against each other without becoming irritated and chapped - no more chafing! If your baby already has chafed skin, gently bathe the area with water. The key here is to pat-dry thoroughly afterwards and to apply the nosebalm as needed.

  • Diaper rash- Gently bathe the area with water. Similar to the chafing, you want to also pat-dry thoroughly afterwards and apply the nosebalm as needed.

  • Mosquito bites - A good way to keep them away is to cover your baby in a net and/or long sleeves and pants. If your baby has mosquito bites, apply the nosebalm to calm the swelling and to soothe itching.

  • Poison Ivy - If you notice this plant near your house, it would be ideal to simply remove it, therefore, removing the possibility of your baby coming in contact with it. If they have poison ivy, wash the skin with hypoallergenic soap and water immediately. Apply the nosebalm for relief from swelling and itching.

  • Sunburn - It is recommended to keep infants out of direct sunlight during the first six months of life and for babies who are older, we recommend using a baby-safe sunscreen. For mild infant sunburn, apply a cool cloth to your baby's skin for 10-15 minutes a few times daily and apply the nosebalm for relief.

In any of these cases, if the skin irritation persists after several weeks, please contact your pediatrician for further instructions on how to resolve the ailment.
